Death
Thomas P. Jones was murdered June 1, 1931. An article in the Courier Journal, a newspaper in Louisville, Kentucky, dated June 2, 1931 claims Tom Jones' store had been robbed three weeks prior to his murder. On June 1, 1931 Tom was standing guard over his store in Gatron, Kentucky, about 7 miles from Harlan. Apparently he was hoping to capture the robbers in an attempt to destroy evidence of their previous robbery. Unfortunately, Tom was, according to his death certificate, killed instantly by a gun shot. Thomas P. Jones was 83 at the time of his death. Six months later his wife of many years, Araminta Howard committed suicide by throwing herself off a bridge into the Poor Fork branch of the Cumberland River.
